Wonderful job you folks are doing .Wish there are more like you.I live on the west coast-Needles,Ca. and am having difficulty finding a wild bird rescue in my area.A neighbor brought a chick Starling to me a day ago.It is doing well so far on the mash of cheerios, cat food and wheat bread I have been giving it.Very noisy when it sees me arrive to feed it every half hour or so.Do you have any suggestions?I want to do the best I can for the lil thing.
I am unfamiliar with the laws regarding wildlife rehab in Ca. or what you need to do to find a rehabber to care for the bird, I do know, however, that all songbirds birds are federally protected, and without proper permits to care for a wild bird through a rehabilitation process would be breaking federal law regardless of the state regulations. It would be in your best interest and the interest of the bird to find out if there are state and federal permitted rehabbers to care for wild birds in your area. Otherwise, yes, cat food works well. Cheerios I have not done, but should work. I would stay away from any bread product, bread is typically not a good food source for any bird.
